Deep Basement Construction

Date: 31/01/2017

Location: Auckland

Project: NZ International Convention Centre

A few photos showing a well constructed soldier piled wall with ground anchors designed and installed by Grouting Services for main contractor Fletcher Construction as part of the NZ International Convention Centre. The ground anchors were designed to meet a minimum stiffness requirement. The typical bottom up construction sequence required a staged excavation with the installation of the ground anchors as the excavation proceeded downwards. The 20m deep excavation included monitoring systems for deflection of the retaining structure, movement of adjacent ground and neighbouring structures as well as groundwater level / pore pressure changes. Once the excavation met the target depth, the basement structure was constructed before a staged de-tensioning (and in some case removal) of the ground anchors, and transfer of the permanent lateral loads to the internal structure.
